Northern Lights To Be Visible In The UK Tonight

Aurora Borealis Due To Strong Solar Storms

In a very rare situation the Northern Lights will be visible across much of the UK today February 27.

The Met Office has issued an aurora watch for tonight, meaning there is a chance of seeing the celestial spectacle from as far south as London.

The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, appear as bright swirling curtains of lights in the night sky and range in colour from pale green to deep purples and reds.

They are caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's magnetic field.

The best time to see the Northern Lights is typically between 11pm and 1am.

However, they can be visible at other times of night, particularly during periods of high solar activity.

The Met Office said the aurora is likely to be visible in the northern parts of the UK, including Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

However, there is a chance it could be seen further south, depending on the strength of the solar storm.

The Met Office has advised people to head to dark, open areas away from light pollution to give themselves the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

AuroraWatch UK is a free service offering alerts of when the aurora might be visible from the UK.
